Central South University (CSU) is located in Changsha, a historic and cultural city in Hunan province, central south of the People’s Republic of China.
A major rice-producing area, Hunan is situated to the south of the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang). It is bounded by the provinces of Hubei to the north, Jiangxi to the east, and Guangdong to the southeast; by the Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi to the southwest; and by the province of Guizhou and Chongqing municipality to the west. The name Hunan is formed from the Chinese words hu (“lake”) and nan (“south”), meaning the land to the south of Dongting Lake. The capital and most important city of the province is Changsha, situated in the northeast, on the banks of the Xiang River.
CSU was established in April, 2000 on the basis of the amalgamation of the three former individual universities, namely Central South University of Technology (founded in 1952), Hunan Medical University (founded in 1914) and Changsha Railway University (founded in 1953).
Central South University is a key national university under the direct administration of Ministry of Education. It is among the first universities that entered the national key constructions “Project 211” and “Project 985”.
CSU covers an area of 3,810,000 square meters and has a total floor space of 2,330,000 square meters. It also uses advanced teaching and research equipment with a total value of 1 Billion yuan (RMB). The university libraries have a collection of 4,390,000 volumes. Information digitalization and automatic management are applied in these libraries. The university has 3 top affiliated hospitals which enjoy good reputation.

At present, the total number of full-time students at CSU has reached more than 50,000, including more than 15,700 graduates working for master’s and doctoral degrees, more than 33,000 undergraduates, more than 408 overseas students and about 12,000 students taking courses in degree and non-degree programs of adult education. The faculty-student ratio is about 1:8. Among its faculty members, there are 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 13 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
