Odessa State Medical University


ODESSA region is located in the southern part Ukraine, with exit to Black sea and Danube River. The region has State Borders with Moldova and Romania.

Due to its proximity to the Black sea, summer and winter temperatures tend to be several degrees higher than in the rest of the Ukraine. The climate is moderately continental, witha a short, mild winter and a long, hot summer. October to March is winter, December and January being the extremely cold months (avg. temperature 0o to 10o C). Till April, it is spring. During summer, from May till end of September, temperatures average between 15o to 25o C.

Being a major city and a Port town, Odessa region is in abundance of choice food (Indian, Chinese, Arabian, Continental etc.), both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and has a ridh and varied cultural life with theatres, Concert halls, Operas and Balle.


Odessa State Medical University was founded in 1900.

The university is State-Owned with partial autonomy.

It is one of the biggest higher medical institutions in Ukraine, a member of International Association of Universities (IAU), Asociation of European Universities (CRE) and the leader in reformation of medical education in the country.

The university has 18 blocks with a general area of 27,000 sq.m., 48 clinics, 6 hostels, a library with total stock of 10 lakh books, publishing-printing Complex, Scientific Medical Computer Center, Sports Complex, Modern Recreation Centers on the coast of Black sea.

The University enrolls over 4500 students, including 1200 foreign students from 57 countries of the world. Foreign students have been studying since 1946. Presently, students from USA, France, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Jordan, India, Iran, UAE, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bahrain, Nigeria and other countries are studying here.


800 teacher, consisting of 18 academicians, 105 professors and Doctors of Medical Sciences, 405 Assistant Professors and Candidates of Medical Sciences, carry out the studies.Odessa is the first university in Ukraine to start English medium in medical education. Noble prize winner Doctors in different fields are its visiting Professors.

There are 5 faculties, 55 Departments, 38 Specializations and advance training in 20 Specialties at the university.

  • Faculty of advanced medical studies.


The University actively participates in international programs and projects such as on the family medicine (MATRA), International Sorosovsky program in support of education in the sphere of exact medicine (ISSEP), in the programs of American-Austrian fund (AAF), AIHA (American International Health Alliance), USAID (United States Agency of International Development) etc. The cooperation within these programs is realized with Austria, Great Britain, Greece, The Netherlands, The USA and South African Republic.


Central Scientific Research Laboratory, Institute of Clinical Biophysics,Health Family Center, Vivarium, Scientific Research Institute of eyes disease and tissue therapy, Institute of Health Resortology and Medical Rehabilitation, STomatorlogy, Virusology are the clinical bases and bases of practical training.
